DEPARTMENT FUNCTION/JOB OVERVIEW

Works in cooperation with the patient care, case management, and facilities systems to ensure timely admission, transfer and discharge activities.  Responsible for room readiness. Responsible for the inventory and labeling of all patient personal belongings on admission and for the inventory and collection of all personal belongings upon discharge. Incorporates corporate goals and objectives into daily activities.  Work will be performed in an ethical and legal manner following organizational policies, processes, protocols and procedures. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Inventory and record patient personal belongings on designated form and place in chart or designated area to ensure items are maintained in a safe manner.
  2. Records patient valuables on assigned document receives signatures required and takes valuables to the Accounting Department for safe keeping.
  3. Notifies environmental services of room cleaning needs.
  4. Meets and communicates with patient and family upon admission to inform of laundry and personal items required or desired.
  5. Orient patient, family and visitors to surroundings and environment.
  6. Works closely with direct patient care staff to ensure patient and patient room needs are met.
  7. Attends all mandatory in-services.
  8. Practices safe working principles.  Assists other staff to reduce risk in the work place.
  9. Adheres to Madonna's operational definitions.
  10. Collaborates with the patient care, case management, facilities and risk systems to continually improve customer service and efficiencies.
  11. Answers call lights.
  12. Follows instruction from supervisor to perform other functions as assigned in order to achieve the goals within the department and/or system.
  13. Operate marking and sewing machines to mark and label patient clothing items.
  14. Handle, pull and push small carts to deliver supplies and medical equipment to designated areas.
  15. Pull and push small carts to transport patient belongings.
  16. Operate computer for tracking patient activity.
  17. Operate photo copier for assigned projects.
  18. Changes sharps containers using biohazardous waste precautions.
  19. Removes Bio-hazard containers from patient care areas and takes to designated holding area.
  20. Prepares room with patient safe handling devices, slings and supply needs prior to or upon admission.
  21. Removes equipment from room at time of discharge and takes to central services.
  22. Carries portable phone to communicate with clinical staff.
  23. Moves beds to assigned areas for patient care.
  24. Maintain and ensure a safe environment for the department. Handles and operates all necessary equipment and performs required duties according to established safety standards to maintain compliance with regulations and prevent injury.


    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
  25. Requires the ability to lift 10-15 pounds frequently (50 pounds occasionally).
  26. Requires work in standing, walking, kneeling, pushing and pulling positions most of the time.
  27. Indoor work, exposed to disinfectants, patient soil, and dust.
  28. May be exposed to biohazardous materials.


    QUALIFICATIONS (Education/training and/or Experience)

             
    High school equivalency preferred.  Must possess ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, patients, families and staff.  Maintains positive communication in a fast paced environment under adverse conditions.  Some basic level medical training or background is desirable.
